Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] Empty
PostSubject: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeThu Oct 10, 2013 5:35 pm

Scales slithered and skittered against stone as the beast stalked through the shadows. Three long necks strapped in heavy muscles, bound in hardened scales; extended from heavily muscled shoulders, twisting and swaying hypnotically within the darkness. Talons gouged deep rivets in the stone floor with each purposeful step. The monster's body swayed, shoulders rolled, scales shifted with a lethal grace a creature of its size should not bare. Three massive tails flicked behind its bodice, the bone clubbed tips swishing though the are with a low thwish. Six cold, glittering green eyes, filled with the baleful fire of the underworld, gazed out into the sunlight with an accusing glare. As the reptilian demon reached the threshold of the cave, where light and shadow meet and mingled, it did not hesitate to break through the vial of darkness. Light washed over its muzzles traveling from the beast's noses to reveal ugly unadorned serpentine heads, before sliding down its neck to settle upon the creature's body. Like a crocodile silently slipping into the water the Hydra emerged from the darkness of the massive cave into the daylight.

Six slitted nostrils flared creating great puffs of mist in the chilled air. Three pink tongue flicked and flitted from salivating mouths as the monster took in its new world. Golden rings set around cat-like pupils expanded and contracted with the movements of the black slits. Each head turned to face a different direction, constantly moving, twisting, turning as they swayed in slow motion. Stretched out before him the sparkling expanse of Stone Lake dwarfed the large monster. Its pristine surface as smooth as glass reflected the towering cliffs, pine, and mountains that border most of its shore like a giant natural mirror. Nothing stirred, no fowl or other fauna disturbed the serene waters. Other trees mingled with the pine displayed their autumn colors in all their glory, standing out in striking contrast to the deep green and blues of the pine and mountains. The sound of late birds twittered in the air providing a light soprano to the deeper quieter hissing of the wind through the leaves.

This picturesque morning was lost upon the beast, those wicked eyes cared little for life and beauty reveling only in death and destruction. Rarely did the ancient Hydra venture out from its home within the forest, preferring the dark shadows and confines of the trees to the light open land that presented itself to him now. But the days were growing cooler as the nights stretched longer, marking the arrival of fall, then winter, and the eve of his hibernation. Prey would soon become scarce as they moved on to better land, or settled within their dens to enter their own hibernation. And so the cunning beast had sought out  easier prey then that of the forest animals. Today he had come to the lake in search of the lone stragglers of a certain breed of animal, pushed out of their own packs and left virtually defenseless. To live out their pitiful lives within these dank caverns.

These creatures so naive to the world that lie beyond their safe little dens were so easy to trick, trap, and slaughter. This was why he had come to these caves, silently prowling through the night as he picked off the weakened stragglers asleep in their makeshift dens. He had visited several caves in the night, finding only a handful of them to contain the prey he sought. Normally the creature would not bother with the dumb creatures, their coverings proved to be unsettling for his stomach, the strapping's on their feet nigh indigestible. But he had made an expectation today in order to store up sufficient fat stores to last him through the long hard winter. As he lumbered along the shore to the next promising cave, stones of the beach clicking and clacking under foot, his belly rumbled as it complained about its contents. But he paid it no mind, fore today he was on a mission of survival, today he was hunting man.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeSat Oct 12, 2013 6:25 pm

It was the time of day and kind of conditions, Sophia hated to go out in. There was light and there was heat and she hated it. Moving in her many layers was more difficult than at night, now she had to deal with the heat produced by the clothing, her own warmth and the heat of the day. However, these thoughts of discomfort did not enter the woman's mind as she tagged along behind the rest of the group. Throughout the meeting and through the whole plan she had listened and nodded, agreeing with silent enthusiasm to everything said. To say she was excited about the hunt was an understatement. She was bursting with enthusiasm and energy. Alone she would have never been able to hunt something like this Beast down but with a group well the whole game was changed.

Sophia walked silently, her feet not making much sound as each step was laid carefully upon the ground. She was dressed in her usual attire, her need to hide herself and pretend to be something else never leaving her. So she had agreed to come out with this group and hunt the Hydra down, that didn't mean she trusted the group with anymore information, than what was physically visible. She wore her dark, heavy clothing, her sword at her waist strapped tightly. Her various daggers were hidden upon her, only one visible to the side of her thigh. The woman's fingers curled instinctively upon the hilt of her sword, she could have it out in a second if needed and she was more than ready to pull it out at that moment, she fought the urge to do so and lead some to believe she was their for the beast and their heads.

Time seemed to stretch on forever, were they even sure the beast, the hydra of all creatures was here at Stonelake in the day? Did it not prefer the shadow of night and other creatures to prey upon? Why was it here suddenly and would their plan even work? Sophia had to admit, she didn't think it would. How could such different people work together to bring down the hydra? Not a chance, we can. her silent thoughts were mocking more towards the rest an herself, if things went wrong shed do what she knew best. Flee.

Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeSun Oct 13, 2013 1:26 pm

It had all started at a dinner party. That night would undoubtedly remain in Ingram’s memory as a warning example of the dangers of verbal communication for a long, long time. Everything had been going along quite well when suddenly, without any kind of forewarning, someone had exclaimed that they’d never seen Rendell take part on Council’s hunt expeditions. At first Ingram hadn’t realized the danger, but as more and more curious eyes were turned to him, it struck him that apparently these people considered his aversion for unnecessary bloodshed not only odd, but also as a diminishing quality on a man who was supposed to be in charge of the systematic destruction of their enemies. Ingram couldn’t understand their mindset, and just as little he understood what part of killing animals without any concrete reason was so enjoyable that it made even the sharpest of people act like suicidal morons. But, as countless of times before, he had found himself compelled to conform the irrationality of his human peers and explained with freezing voice that he preferred more dangerous quarry than what their usual hunting expeditions had to offer.
That would’ve been end of the matter had one of the guests not been an enthusiastic big game hunter. In a split second Ingram was yet again under attack. Ah, a kindred spirit! Who would have thought! How strange I haven’t spotted you on the hunts held in Firefly Forest. What, never been on one? But my dear man, you must! Quite different from shooting birds, ha ha. Of course there are the lowlifes to put up with, but it only gives the whole thing an additional touch, don’t you know. I hear the upcoming Hunt is going to be quite something. Splendid opportunity to have some excitement. What do you say?

So here he was in the middle of nowhere, walking along a group of depressingly healthy young people in search for a Hydra. He hadn’t expected to meet anyone who knew him, but had ended up leaving out any indicators of his alliance or status just to make sure there wouldn’t be any disastrous surprises. The decision had turned out to be a wise one. Ingram glanced quickly at Silas’ direction. Hopefully they would all be so busy with staying alive that there wouldn’t be time for idle chatter. Ingram wasn’t exactly looking forward to explaining what a deity of sickness was doing here taking out monsters with two pieces of sharpened met- Ah.
Well, well.
Ingram wasn’t a master of tracking, but he doubted whether there were many creatures capable of leaving claw-marks of this size in Stone Lake’s area. Stones had been disturbed here and there as if something extremely heavy had walked over them. He had no idea if the tracks were fresh or not, but judging by the bacteria left behind by drops of saliva, they weren’t far away from their quarry.

Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeTue Oct 15, 2013 6:13 pm

Silas let out a slow quiet breath and watched it form into a steady stream as it flowed from his lungs and out his mouth. The morning was cold glittering frost that had formed the night before still coated everything in a sparkling dust. With  every careful step the tiny crystals cracked and shattered making it difficult for even skilled hunters to walk through the forest silently. Still Silas seemed to move through the forest like a phantom, his steps light as if he were made of air as he moved alongside his hunting partners. He knew almost everyone here, not well of course, but he was familiar with them enough to know their faces and general personality. The oldest of the group, well judging on a mortal point of view, was Ingram, who seemed particularly unhappy today as he did his best to tolerate their presence. While misses Parks seemed as suspicious of everyone as usual, and Avena was her usual graceful self as she moved ahead of him like a beautiful Wildcat.

The only personal here he was unfamiliar with was the youngest addition to the group, a man who's name was Jacob. The boy seemed far too young to be on such a dangerous hunt, of course he didn't appear much older then him but nineteen was better then sixteen. What an odd bunch they were, certainly not the people he'd choose to work together in a group. This would be fun. Falling back he  allowed Ingram and Avena to track, his own sharp eyes easily picking out the tracks of the Hydra as they left the forest behind for the banks of the lake. He didn't like being in open ground, the beast could easily spot them before their hunt even began. Keeping low he clutched the single hilt at his hip. Skillfully crafted the double swords fit together in one sheath and could be used as one sword then separate in a blink of an eye into two deadly weapons.

He felt confident in everyone's abilities here, well he had yet to get a handle on the Jacob fellow who reeked of oil and engine grease, yet he found himself feeling uncertain. The Hydra was a truly infamous foe, even a deity would have trouble brining it down, yet here were these human going after it with nothing but close range weapons. The monster would not only have a longer reach but with its flexible necks it could combat close range attacks as well, not to mention its scales could deflect their blades.  He smiled, it had been a while since he felt this uncertain and jittery before a battle. Normally he wouldn't hunt unless it was for food, generally not for himself because he didn't really need to eat, he didn't even remember the last time he had hunted for sport; if he had at all.

But today this hunt was not for food or sport to him, he knew of the Hydra's evil and why it was at the lake rather then its preferred home in the forest. It had come seeking an easy meal as it preyed upon the men and women who had settled here after being cast out of their homes. Sure not all of them were savory characters, most were thieves and braggarts, but still they did not deserve to be killed by the Hydra and he intended to put a stop to its hunting days forever. Stopping he looked to Avena, Parks, and Ingram for instruction, he'd let the  'older' people lead, for now he'd just keep an eye out for the beast.

Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeThu Oct 17, 2013 6:53 pm

Avena walked on in silence. She had learned long ago to walk swiftly and quietly. She had also learned that when on a hunt it was not wise to speak. If your prey heard you, it would be lost, or you would be dead. She knew they would soon need to stop and devise a battle strategy. It was always a risk, for in planning there would be talking.
She had always preferred hunts she knew more about, the ones that could be planned for ahead of time. But sadly, some hunts need to be planned while in the midst of it. She supposed an upside to this was the ability to get to know the team, not through their words but their actions, their body language, their movements, and also their familiarity with their weapons.
Why she had even agreed to go on this hunt was a mystery to her. Avena figured the only reason she had agreed was because of Silas. She had met him about a month ago, when he had saved her from falling. That day he had also saved her life, he had stopped an arrow from hitting her. he had never admitted that he had done it, but their was no other explanation. The arrow had simply stopped in the air and fallen to the ground. Silas had been the only one there.
Avena had been suspicious of him from then on. She knew she could trust him, but she wanted to know how he was able to do that. The only people she had even heard of being able to do that were... deities. But then that would mean that he was like a godly being.. or something like that. This young man was not how she had imagined a deity.
The she didn't know anyone else in the group, except Jacob. The young man had come along on another dangerous hunt... but this time his captain wasn't there. That meant her captain/brother wasn't there to tell her to watch him. Although she didn't think she could go without helping him. The boy was the youngest here and didn't have much experience with the hunts. There was a likely possibility that any of them could be injured or killed in this hunt, and she knew Jacob was among the most likely.
Another reason as to why the young woman had joined the hunt was to save those within the forest. She understood that the beast was preying on the people living there, she was not the type of person to hunt for sport. There always had to be a better reason to kill.
They came to a stop. Avena noticed Silas looking to her, Ingram, and Parks as if to say they were in charge. She was only a couple years older than him, it's not like she would be much smarter or better than planning.... at least, why should he think she was.
Speaking in rather hushed tones she said, "So, lets hear everyone's plans. It may very well help us devise a successful one. Anyone willing to share?" she scanned their faces. The woman waited, seeing who would speak first. She always liked to pick the leaders out of the crowd.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeSun Oct 20, 2013 5:20 pm

The horrendous beast had not yet sensed the presence of danger, the stench of human already permeated the air from the various bums that resided here, still within the shadows of the forest the hunters had luckily avoid the Hydra's detection. In their current state of disarray they would have been easy targets for the experienced beast. But that advantage not had been entirely lost as he walked on, his tails dragging along the grow rattling stones and digging gouges into the earth before they lifted back into the air to twist and sway like the heads that attached at the other end. Thee cave he had been eye was now just a few paces away, within it he could smell his next human, the last meal for the day before he'd find a nice patch of warm sunlight in the protection of the forest to rest and digest his food. Again his stomach moaned in protest, a Hydra head burped as their single stomach protested the consumption of any more homosapiens.

Suddenly a voice carried through the air, a human voice. Instantly all heads turn in the direction of the sound. At first he saw nothing each eye narrowing as he closely studied the shadows, there! Hunkered down were four humans, hunters. Fury filled those wicked eyes as he stalked forward using the color of his scales to blend into the gray stone the beast moved surprisingly fast silent for one of his size. Clambering over a giant boulder that had been left by the receding cliffs centuries ago the Hydra let out a vicious his as it lunged at the party its three heads aiming for the three nearest members, Ingram, Sophia, and Avena. Poisonous fangs glistened in the growing sunlight of the autumn morning as they aimed to pierce the necks of their targets.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 21, 2013 5:03 pm

Four of them in total, two men and two women though her true identity was unknown. There was the smallest hint of doubt in Sophia's mind as to the success of this hunt, well actually she doubted in everyone there including herself. The hydra, the thing would have them all killed before they blinked, that was if it didn't somehow sneak up on them and kill them without a single human knowing of its presence. She had always believed that death by creature was an okay way to go, but the hydra... She would prefer anything but that. Sophia's wonderful and encouraging thoughts of doubt were interrupted, however, as she stopped in place. There was a strange presence in the air all around, a heavy curtain of unease. Shivering slightly, Sophia shook her head. Going paranoid? Maybe, best keep up.

There was one thing Sophia didn't do in public or with another person unless the other person was her own reflection and that was talk. The woman wouldn't speak even of it depended on life or death, so Avenas request for sharing plans was rather a ridiculous idea now that they were out here. If they want to let them plan, it won't help. The beast will mess it up anyway, better to just go with the flow. the woman raised her hands and backed away from the group, a silent sign that she had nothing to say and wasn't going to say anything. Talk. As if she would ever do such a thing-

Slithering, she was sure of it. Sophia had pushed it to the farthest recess of her mind, had ignored the soft sounds as the group stopped to make "plans". But now she was sure she had heard something and the something took no hesitation in making its presence known. The loud hiss of the creature rang loudly in her ears and Sophia had just enough time to react and draw out the long sword at her side and thrust it before her, shielding herself from the third heads attack. Ack dirty creature! We were planning here, couldn't it have waited five minutes more? scolding herself for her own inattention to what was going on the female pushed back with a low growl. She had no intention on dying at the fangs of this thing, so with a grumble in her throat and a clear mind set with determination she drew out the dagger at her side, aiming for the creatures eye. The battle had begun and they were all caught distracted. Great way to start a hunt for the hydra.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeTue Oct 22, 2013 11:35 am

Plans?
Ingram looked up with an air of mild surprise. What plans? How were they supposed to have plans of any true importance when they couldn’t even be sure of Hydra’s exact location? Honestly, humans. Such incomprehensible lot. Well, perhaps he too would’ve liked to have a strategy to cling to, no matter how dubious when put to practice, if he had had his life at stake as literally as these two. He wasn’t sure about Silas – the boy had never specified how he could get killed, and it wasn’t particularly polite to ask things like that from other deities.
Ingram breathed out slowly and resumed examining the tracks. He paced forward with short meditative steps, drumming the spadroon’s hilt silently with his fingers. It seemed that their best bet would be to inflict as much damage as possible before being forced to enter close combat. The only problem was they had no long range weapons or firepower at their disposal. If the hunters wanted to gain any advantage without actually killing themselves during some foolhardy coup, they’d have to stick to the old-fashioned ways. Blue eyes wandered up the cliff and scanned the rugged surface for anything inspiring. Here and there he could spot rocks which looked like they could be dislodged with little external help. Rockfalls were handy when applied to relatively slow and clumsy creatures (like humans), but Ingram had his doubts whether that would work on Hydra. He’d been told the creature was surprisingly agile and quick in its movements. Taking that all of its three heads didn’t happen to be completely blind and deaf, scoring a hit would require some kind of diversion. Which, in turn, would most likely require certain… sacrifices from the hunters’ part. Too bad there were only four of them. He was used to having a leeway of at least ten times that amount when lives were concerned.

The closely guarded silence was suddenly pierced by menacing hiss. The deity turned around just in time to see a serpentine head dart at his direction. Unlike Sophia, who was lucky enough to be standing farther away from the boulder, Ingram had merely time to grab the hilt of his sword and start to left. The next thing he knew, there was a current of air, a huge fang dug through the thick fabric of his coat missing shoulder and neck only barely, and he was hurled on his back by the force of the impact.
It was the first time Ingram ever got deliberately attacked by an animal. Of course there’d been instances when he had happened to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, but this was no accident. The thing had looked straight at his face before striking.
Up to this moment the idea of killing Hydra had roused only dissatisfaction and even straightforward unwillingness in the deity. After all, he had even less reasons to wish it harm than to animals in general. It didn’t just eat humans, it ate outcasts. Thieves, pirates, filth which no one would miss and without which life would be so much easier for him. But now he was out of sympathy. He wouldn’t let any living thing survive such insolence.
Without wasting a second, Ingram drew the combat knife from his belt and, using both hands, aimed a blow at beast’s gum near the root of the fang. He’d need to get free and back to his feet before Hydra could come up with anything worse.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeWed Oct 23, 2013 11:13 pm

Silas simply wanted someone to take charge and tell him what to do, go left, go right, that was all he had been looking for. They had not had time to plan and he was hoping someone would have some semblance of one, even the bare bone of a plan was fine, one that can be altered and evolved to fit the situation and sudden circumstances that appear in situations like this. The world was full of all sorts of surprises and it just loved to throw the unexpected at you. He politely waited for the others to take charge his bright bronze eyes watching them, reading their expressions. Apparently they didn't think Avena's proposition about a plan was a good idea, but he doubted she actually wanted some concrete plan, just a general layout as flexible and adaptable to give them a general idea of what their roles were in this haphazard team. That way they had an idea what they were doing and could react as needed.

Suddenly something changed in the air as the wind whispered warning to him causing his hair to stand on end. He had avoided using his powers to appear as normal as possible, not connecting with the wind like a radar to detect other creatures ahead of time. However he could never fully shut it off and so the wind warned him of the Hydra's attack seconds before it bounded over the boulder lunging for the others with a vengeful hiss. Grabbing Avena's arm he yanked her aside drawing his sword he held it vertically placing his hand on the flat of the blade to block the snake's head from biting down on him. As he pushed back against the beast fighting its overpowering strength.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeSat Oct 26, 2013 1:37 am

She knew the others thought her reckless and ignorant. But they had gone in without even an outline, no one had been given roles. The plan didn't need to define everything they would do. How could it? they knew little to nothing of this creature. But Avena thought it foolhearty to go in without ay kind of planning.
She knew she had been taking a risk talking, even as quietly as she did. But if this mismatched group went into battle without it, they would surely perish. After speaking, she let herself become more alert, more aware of her surroundings. There had been a change in the air... something wasn't right.

The beast attacked. She was not surprised by the creature, but by Silas. His quick actions to defend her. But why? She could've defended herself. She'd already had her hands on the hilts of her blades. But apparently he hadn't noticed or didn't care.
"Bring in on," she muttered while drawing her swords. Quick as lightening, she was up and swinging the blades at the head of which had charged her. Avena figured she might as well help Silas, he had helped her after all.

PostSubject: Re: Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT]   Let the Hunter Be Hunted [HUNT] I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 28, 2013 2:03 am

Scales skittered against metal as Sophia's blade deflected the beast's attack sending it reeling back in order to avoid the knife arching toward its evil eye. Taken by surprised the beast was unable to dodge as the cold metal bit into the soft flesh breaking through the thin bone behind piercing the brain. The head fell to the earth with a thud as the other heads let out a scream. Moving past the pain the second head also met with pain as the sting of the man's blade sliced its gums severing his left fang. Letting out a furious shriek as the fang flew through the air, it did not draw back forcing through the pain and loss of its third head, it shifted tactics as it lunged for his side intent on biting him in half, or at the very least dealing a mortal blow. The first head slammed into Silas's blade, pushing with all of its might, it was surprised that a normal human could withstand such a crushing blow, let alone combat his strength. This small creature was keeping him at bay, however he was beginning to fail. The serpent's stomach boiled with agitation stirring its contents and sending a waves of nausea through its body, causing its moves to temporarily slow.

Suddenly another blade sliced through the air slamming into the hydra's scales at the base of his skull, the blow bounced off of the protective scales. Avena's blade left not even a scratch however her blow was enough to distract the beast causing his head to rear back. Shaking his head the beast hissed, took a deep breath, then let out a ear piecing shriek that would defend anyone near by, the other head joined filling the open ground with its cries. The close call and the loss of one of its heads and fangs caused its stomach to turn with furry once more, had the woman sliced with an uppercut instead of a downward blow her sharpened blade would have sliced through the softer scales at the joint of the head and neck. Its clubbed tails thrashed not yet used as they tore up the ground behind them.

Thud! The Hydra's head fell heavily to the ground at Sophia's feet, her dagger impaled into its eye. The masked woman's hand shook, the head had fallen, she had killed one of the heads. A surge of pride welled through her lasting only a few seconds before she wrapped her hand tightly around the dagger and pulled the knife from its hold within the beast skull. The moment of triumph was short lived as the sounds of the ongoing fight with the other two heads raged on. Sophia turned to watch for a few breaths before looking at the creature.

The third head was down, the second head had lost its fang, and everyone was fighting against the creature. Without two seconds hesitation she used the advantage of the fallen head and climbed into the creatures back as it thrashed this way and that with the other three attackers. Maybe from back here she could get at the back of the beasts head or distract it enough with her presence that the attention and attack would not focus solely upon her fellow companions in the hunt. Sophia pulled her sword from within its sheath and swung it quickly towards the base of the creatures first head.

Good thing the beast hadn’t decided to pin its prey down with anything less fragile. The blade met its target and received a high-pitched shriek in return; Hydra was now a fang poorer. Ingram didn’t take time to rejoice creature’s agony – as soon as he could move, he rolled to his side and was up again, holding the spadroon steadily in his hand, eyes fixed on the serpentine head. There was blood on his hands, and some had sprayed on his face and coat, too, but he couldn’t feel its warmth.
The second attack came almost instantly. Ingram was still too close to be able to dodge without taking the risk of ending up all over the ground again, but this time he didn’t need to worry about that. He was armed and prepared. A spadroon isn’t exactly the ideal weapon when hunting’s concerned, but it’s just the right thing when you want to give someone a major headache.
Everything happened in a blink of an eye. The man stepped forward and, taking the advantage on the empty space left behind by the missing fang, thrust the sword towards the roof of Hydras mouth before the creature could sink its teeth into him. He knew what he was doing – he could see the brain behind all the flesh and other clutter – but there was still a grave possibility that he’d need to start coming up with some good explanations for surviving something that looked like getting bitten in half.
